One of the many reasons that young adults go to college is to help prepare themselves for adulthood. Besides career skills, they need to learn skills to help them advance their interpersonal relationships, their time management, and their money management. So many college students come through college without mastering that last skill and not understanding how to live on a budget.
Living on a budget means keeping accurate records of all money coming in and going out. It also means being able to plan in advance for expenses that arise, including those that are unforeseen as well as those that are expected.
Someone who is successfully living on a budget understands the importance of making sure that money is also being saved. So many college students believe that they do not have enough money to save anything. If they really searched, however, they would likely find some way to save a few dollars a month at the very least. While this may not seem like much, it does teach them the habit of saving.
One important thing for college students to remember is to avoid using credit cards at all costs. Credit cards are not a budgeting tool. In most cases, they are designed to catch the eye of young adults who will use them on the spur of the moment, often without taking the time to decide if the purchase is worth the full amount they will pay in the long run once the exorbitant finance charges and yearly fees are added to the balance.
For most students, college is a place to get them ready for the rest of their lives. The friends they make, the knowledge they gain, and the habits they choose to keep up with will stick with them longer than anything they gained as children.
